San Angelo, Texas Automated Flight Service Station (SJT AFSS)
The San Angelo AFSS was commissioned on September 30, 1987 and dedicated on November 10, 1987.  It was located at Mathis Field in San Angelo, Texas.  The AFSS flight service area covered approximately 100,000 square miles and was responsible for over 500 airports, including Midland, Austin, San Antonio, Corpus Christi and McAllen.  The facility was housed in a 12,200 square foot building constructed by the City of San Angelo.  At the time of commissioning the SJT AFSS was staffed with 31 Air Traffic Control Specialist (ATCS), 5 Area Supervisors, 2 Training Specialist, one which also did Quality Assurance, 1 Secretary, 1 Administrative Support Clerk, 1 Assistant Manager for Training and Procedures, 1 Assistant Air Traffic Manager and 1 Air Traffic Manager.  SJT AFSS was the Hub Facility for six other FSS’s in Southwest Texas.  Those six were located at Wink, Midland, Austin, San Antonio,  Alice and McAllen, Texas.  The AFSS was also responsible for one of the longest border crossing areas, stretching from Brownsville to near El Paso.

The San Angelo AFSS was named the FAA Southwest Regional Facility of the Year in 1988, 1990 and 1993.  It was named the FAA National Facility of the Year in 1990 and 1993.  In 1990 and 1992 it received the FAA ATH Facility Evaluation award. In 1992-1993 the Wink (INK), Midland (MAF), Austin (AUS), San Antonio (SAT), Alice (ALI) and McAllen (MFE) FSS’s were decommissioned and their services transferred to SJT AFSS.

SJT AFSS was decommissioned July 30, 2007.
